Vertical and Mileage

Compiled by Cave Dog

Whenever possible, the vertical and mileage estimates for this page have been taken from the Adirondack Mountain Club's Guide to:  Catskill Trails:  The Forest Preserve Series (2nd ed.), Volume VIII.  The Dog Team has found that other resources, such as, the NY-NJ Trail Conference Map or trail signs to be less consistent.  Both contradicts their own measurements on many occasions.  The ADK's measurements also contradict themselves, but less often.  When the map or trail signs are inconsistent with the ADK's measurements, it usually can be accounted for by rounding.  However, when rounding cannot be the cause, the map's measurements are nearly always higher than the ADK's measurements and the trail signs' measurements higher than the map's.  It should be noted that if the map or the trail signs are more accurate, the measurements on this page would be underestimated.  The ADK's measurements are sometimes measured to the nearest tenth of a mile or quarter mile and other times they are measured to the nearest five hundredths of a mile.  This causes the measurements to sometimes be accurate to different decimals.  The Dog Team does not believe that they can measure from a map any more accurate than to the nearest tenth of a mile.  So, all estimates not from the ADK are done to the nearest tenth of a mile.  All road mileages were taken from a car's odometer and measured to the nearest tenth of a mile.  Elevations not given by the ADK are recorded as halfway between the two nearest contours.  Bushwhacks in the Catskills have not been formally measured.  The Dog Team recognizes that these measurements are of limited accuracy.  Minor ups and downs and switchbacks that are not visible from the map are not included.  Also not included is the small increase in distance due to the hypotenuse with vertical gain that gets magnified by the magnitude of vertical gain.  An effort was made to derive distances for the bushwhacks that were comparable to known measurements of trails of similar length.
